Question 1

Is it legal to send business text messages to customers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you must comply with TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) regulations. You need express written consent before sending marketing texts. Replying to an inbound message or texting about an existing appointment/transaction is generally fine. Always include an opt-out option (e.g., 'Reply STOP to unsubscribe') in marketing messages.

Question 2

How long should a business text message be?

Accepted Answer

Keep business texts under 160 characters when possible (one SMS segment). If you need more detail, stay under 320 characters. Short, clear messages get higher response rates. Include your business name, the key information, and one clear action for the recipient to take.

Question 3

What's the best time to send business text messages?

Accepted Answer

The best times are Tuesday through Thursday between 10am–12pm and 2pm–4pm. Avoid early mornings (before 8am), late evenings (after 9pm), and weekends unless your business operates then. For appointment reminders, 24–48 hours in advance works best. For promotions, send during business hours.

Question 4

How do I get customers to opt in to receive business texts?

Accepted Answer

Collect opt-ins at the point of sale, through a website form, or by having customers text a keyword to your number. Always clearly explain what type of messages they'll receive, how often, and how to opt out. Never add customers to text lists without explicit consent — this violates TCPA.
